HEALTH RISKS
Many people who work with acrylics aren’t aware of the
risks. It is usually not the finished product of thermosetting plastic
that is dangerous, but the chemical components that are
mixed together to form the plastic.
It is also important to remember that the odour free gels
are acrylics. Most components in acrylics are irritating for
eyes, skin and respiratory passages and give symptoms
such as eczema, dry mucous membrane and asthma.
Irritation occurs due to exposure to gases or aerosols,
also dust that appears when grinding nails gives these
symptoms if unreacted chemical components are left in
the nail.
In a nail salon there are other dangerous substances; for
example; nail polish, nail strengtheners and polish remover
can also give problems for the operator and client.
To know what the products contain and what risks they
constitute, always ask the supplier for a MSDS (Material
Safety Data Sheet).
Thermosetting plastics
There are many different kinds of rigid plastics for different
uses. Common to all of these plastics is that they are
all manufactured using one or more components which
react together and combine to form thermosetting plastic.
One common thermosetting plastic is acrylic, which is used for
nail sculpturing to build up artificial nails. The acrylic
is hardened through UV-light, visual light or by adding a
hardener. Cyanoactylates is used to glue the artificial nail
on top of the natural nail.
When working with acrylics the risk of developing oversensitivity
is increased, it is therefore very important
to know the risks and how to protect the operator from
them.
